In light of Eddie Van Halen’s recent passing, I came up with the idea to record a guitar solo accompanied by audio clips from various interviews with Eddie that capture what a lovable goof and free spirit he was. I think Van Halen’s records are kinda cheesy, and Eddie’s flashy, guitar god approach to rock music isn’t something I try to emulate in my own playing, but I have the utmost respect and admiration for his Herculean efforts to continually push the limits of what can be done on the electric guitar, and his unrelenting dedication to pouring countless hours into his craft in order to bring all the wacky sounds he imagined to life on his instrument. Eddie is very possibly the most influential and easily recognizable guitar player in rock music history behind Jimi Hendrix, and all guitar players, recording artists and producers owe him a debt of gratitude for developing and refining countless guitar techniques and sonic innovations that are commonly practiced today. Someone like Eddie comes around once in a generation, if not once every few generations, and 16 year old Harley was lucky to have had the formative experience of seeing Eddie perform live with Van Halen.

He was the guitar player’s guitar player

A titan among titans

Rest In Peace, Eddie
