Even the most deafening or jarring piece of metal music could still be very mainstream if it employs sounds, techniques and cliches typically associated with a well established and commonly performed genre of metal. On the other hand, the tracks I’ll be discussing in this article possess an easily palatable, yet unmistakably avant-garde quality that won’t offend anyone, but won’t offer listeners anything resembling a comfort zone either. Both tracks employ elements from disco and electronic dance music, but differ too greatly from typical examples of those genres to actually be them. They purposely fail at being catchy, feel-good dance numbers, but they aren’t unpleasant to listen to either, and I even find “I’m At That Party Right Now” pretty funny.

“The Centre Of The Bridge” is a pretty track with busy, arpeggiated synth parts playing over a relentlessly droning root note. The synth parts explore some fancy sounding modal motifs, but they never once venture outside of the good old major scale. This allegiance to the major scale creates an air of familiarity, but the notey, rambling synth part feels a little odd to listen to, especially considering there’s no groove or percussion on this track besides the quarter note pulse of the root note on a goofy marimba patch. It’s just you, a root note, and a quirky synth part.

“I’m At That Party Right Now” might seem like a run of the mill disco number at first, but you’ll quickly be introduced to the odd character who narrates the track. He really has to boogie and apparently, he’s just started feeling “it” which is causing him enough euphoria to demonstrate an uncomfortable amount of excitement and pleasure at the thought of being at a party. The music’s fine, but the real star of the show is this dude with some of the sleaziest “yeahs” I’ve ever heard.

So check these tracks out. You might like what you hear.

Might.
